What is a mustard seed?
In Matthew 13:31-32 NASB2020 it says, "He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a person took and sowed in his field; and this smaller than all the other seeds, but when it is fully grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches".
During Jesus's time here on earth he often spoke in parables, which can be read all throughout the gospels, even the disciples question Jesus as to why he speaks that way. As I write this, I'm not theology expert, nor do I claim to be, I'm simply putting my analysis of these verses and how I apply it to my personal life. A mustard seed is a really small seed. I inserted a picture here so for those that have never seen one, thanks Google.
What I think Jesus is trying to teach is that it starts with a small little seed of faith that begins the journey walk with Jesus. It can be read all throughout the Bible about God's commandments, His will, His desire for us to deny ourselves daily. But it starts with a mustard sized seed of faith that starts it all. It's that first step into walking into your new life. It's the first part of shaking off that old life, like a snake shedding its skin. God just asks us to love Him with all of our hearts and the rest naturally follows. It's like the farmer that sows that first vegetable in his farmer, having the faith that it'll do well, it'll grow. The farmer waters it, nurtures it, and takes care of this seed while planted to produce a big beautiful vegetable that will feed his family. This verse encourages me as I gave my life to God last year, and haven't turned back since. It was that small faith that kick started my hunger for God's heart. It was Jesus's profound love and mercy that carried along the river towards the kingdom of heaven. It was His grace that made me realize how I was in a constant battle with suffering because I was trying to seek validation in the world. Yet, everytime I thought the world would be there for me, I was left with stupid mistakes and regrets. I appreciate these verses so much because it truly takes one time God moves in your life to open your heart to Him. When He's been waiting all along for you to come home and find healing and comfort. The verse says, "so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches". What I think that means is your faith grew so high and monumental that the effect of your work for God bring people to find God in your faith. By way of your faith, people were led to God. That is powerful.
